Applications of Sodium thiosulfate in Aquaculture

Applications of Sodium thiosulfate in Aquaculture

Sodium thiosulfate, also known as thiosulfate, plays an important role in aquaculture. It is often used to improve water quality and promote the healthy growth of aquatic organisms. However, it is crucial to control the dosage to maximize its effectiveness and ensure safety. The specific dosage should be adjusted according to factors such as the species being farmed, water quality, and the aquaculture environment.

► Usage and Precautions for Sodium thiosulfate

The appropriate dosage of sodium thiosulfate in aquaculture is 500-1000 grams per acre. Sodium thiosulfate is a common thiosulfate. It is colorless and transparent, appearing as crystals or fine granules, odorless but with a salty taste. Sodium thiosulfate is efflorescent and deliquescent, exhibiting different physical properties in dry and humid environments. It is readily soluble in water, and its aqueous solution shows a slightly alkaline reaction. When it reacts with strong acids, it produces elemental sulfur and sulfur dioxide gas. Sodium thiosulfate (Hydrogen thiosulfate) primarily functions as a detoxifier in aquaculture, but its detoxification range is limited, making it unsuitable for long-term continuous use.

Caution should be exercised when using sodium thiosulfate. Avoid use in fragile water conditions, during algal blooms, when algae are surfacing, or on rainy days to prevent accidents. Also, avoid mixing it with strong acids, strong alkalis, or strong oxidizing agents to prevent phytotoxicity.
