Sodium hydrosulfite is widely used in the textile industry for its reducing dyeing, reducing cleaning, printing, and bleaching, as well as for bleaching silk, wool, and nylon fabrics. Because it contains no heavy metals, fabrics treated with it retain vibrant colors and are less prone to fading. Furthermore, sodium hydrosulfite is used for bleaching food products such as gelatin, sucrose, and honey, as well as soaps, vegetable and animal oils, bamboo products, and kaolin. In organic synthesis, sodium hydrosulfite, as a reducing agent or bleaching agent, is ideally suited for wood pulp papermaking. In water treatment and pollution control, it can reduce many heavy metal ions such as Pb²⁺ and Bi³⁺ to metals and is used for preserving food and fruit.
